Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes is a charming story about a headstrong little mouse who loves school. Shes loves school so much that she desires to become a teacher one day. This desire is greatly influenced by her awesome teacher Mr. Slinger. Her feelings change dramatically when she is reprimanded by Mr. Slinger for distracting the class with her new purse, shiny quarters and movie star sunglasses. Lilly allows her disappointment to take over and eventually lets it turn into anger. Lilly then draws an ugly picture of her teacher, which she later slips into his book bag. Lilly soon realizes that her actions were wrong and seeks to rectify the situation.

I love Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. it is one of my most favorite books. Kevin Henkes is a brilliant author who writes books that are entertaining for children and adults. The story lines can easily be applied to any child's life. I have personally used this book in the classroom with a wide variety of children. I believe that this story is accessible to many because it appeals to realistic situations. We have all let our anger to take over at some point in our lives and allowed ourselves to do regretful things. What I love most about this Kevin Henkes books is that the child leaners their lesson on their own.  Adults in the story are there to guide the child but the children take responsibility for their own actions. This is such a wonderful quality for children to learn at a young age.

I love Lilly because she reminds me so much of myself. Lilly is such a unique and quirky little mouse. She is such a free spirit and is very passionate about things. She wears shiny red boots and a crown. How can you not love that? If you think that I am too old to wear a crown, you are sadly mistaken.  My last birthday party was Cinderella themed and I wore a sparkly blue tiara the entire day. Actually, I wore it most of my birthday week. You should try it sometime. It is awesome.  Obviously, this type of free thinking silliness appeals to me and Lilly definitely fits that bill.

The illustrations for this book are hilarious! Children love them but Kevin Henkes adds great asides that most adults think are pretty funny as well. I also feel like the pictures are so quaint and sweet. I can visualize a child in place of Lilly so easily. It is just wonderful.

This book is FABULOUS!! I love reading and re-reading it. I never get tired of it, neither do my students. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
